Classic Formula 3 Historic Motorsport Team
Monday 4th August 2008
Yesterday we raced at the Castle Combe Classic Festival at the popular Wiltshire circuit. As last year, qualifying took place on a damp but drying track, so we selected slick tyres, which turned out to be the wrong choice, leaving us in 16th place on the grid. A good start gained us a few places before the first corner, and there followed some entertaining dices as we moved through the pack to finish in 9th place, having made up more places from our start position than any other driver.
Monday 15th September 2008
On Saturday we took part in our last race of the season, on Brands Hatch’s Indy circuit. Despite some miserable weather over the last few weeks, the weekend was warm and sunny - perfect conditions for a good day’s racing. In qualifying the car ran superbly, lapping the 1.25 mile circuit in 50.296secs - the quickest we’ve ever been around here. This gave 7th place on the grid, easily the best this season.
Too much wheelspin at the start of the race meant we arrived at the first corner in 8th place, but going up to the hairpin 2nd bend we were on the inside of the 7th place car. The car immediately ahead spun to the outside allowing us to move into 6th place. We started to open out a gap to the cars behind us, but equally the cars in front were getting away, although another spinner, again at the hairpin, saw us through to 5th place. This was looking comfortable until the track became very oily at about half distance and being perhaps a little too cautious due to the unpredictable grip, we lost four places, only re-gaining one of those toward the end of the race as the oil dried out. 8th place at the end was a little disappointing, having run so high earlier. There are still 2 more races in the Classic F3 Championship this season, but we have already started stripping the car ready for a winter re-build, which we hope will see it among the leading contenders next season.
January 2009
Woodside Motorsport are pleased to announce that we will have support from Horsham engineering firm Chess Dynamics for the coming season.
April 2009
On Sunday 5th April we took part in the opening Classic F3 championship race of the season at Donington Park in Leicestershire. A good qualifying performance was wasted however when the clutch played up before the start, forcing us to start a lap behind everyone else. Despite a consistent drive, we were only able to gain one spot before the end of the race.
1st June 2009
Yesterday we raced in the Classic F3 round at Snetterton, Norfolk. Qualifying 11th on the grid was a little disappointing, and we had made little progress during the race, when a spin at the Russell chicane took the left rear tyre off the rim and the resulting damage took us out of the race.
Next race will be on the famous Brands Hatch GP circuit on July 5th.
1st July 2009
Since the last race at Snetterton we found some problems with the rear brakes, which likely contributed to the spin that took us out of the race there. With that fixed, we hope for a better run at Brands Hatch on Sunday.
7th July 2009
At Brands Hatch on Sunday, we opted to go for a solid, safe performance, without pushing too hard, and were therefore delighted to qualify in 10th place of the 31 cars taking part. The combination of good weather, and the appearance of the FIA historic F1 championship at this event, contributed to a sizeable crowd, who saw us move up a place to 9th by the first corner, only to lose a place again near the end of the first lap. We stayed in this position, which became 9th after the demise of another runner after a few laps, until the car started losing water and mis-firing after about 8 laps. As we’d built a good gap to the following cars, it wasn’t until the penultimate lap that we got caught and passed, eventually finishing in 12th place.
1st October 2009
We brought the season to a close with a disappointing day at Thruxton. Despite a lot of work having been done since the previous race to ready the car, there were several failures, with a faulty spark plug and then starter motor failure, restricting us to 4 laps of practice, after which a water leak from the engine head put paid to any chance of a recovery in the race.
